Florida Has 18th Highest Rate of Death by Injury in U.S.

by Catherine Rinaldo on June 4, 2012

Tax HelpIn a new report, The Facts Hurt: A State-By-State Injury Prevention Policy Report, Florida had the 18th highest rate of injury-related deaths, with 66.8 per 100,000 Floridians suffering fatal injuries compared with the national rate of 57.9 per 100,000.

The report by the Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) said that millions of injuries could be prevented each year if more states adopted each of the 10 injury prevention policies recommended to reduce injuries and save lives.

Florida scored 6 out of 10 (in bold) on key indicators of steps states can take to prevent injuries:

  1. 1.     Seat belt laws
  2. Mandatory ignition locks for convicted drunk drivers
  3. Universal motorcycle helmet law
  4. Requirement to use booster seats until age 8
  5. 5.     Mandatory bicycle helmet law
  6. 6.     Ability for people in dating relationships to get protective orders
  7. 7.     Have a strong concussion law
  8. Score an “A” in the Break the Cycle Report on Teen Dating
  9. 9.     Have an active prescription drug monitoring program
  10. 10.  90+ percent of ER patients coded for cause of injury to help researchers track trends

Tax HelpA study at two Boston area hospitals has found that surgical residents average less than six hours of sleep a night and are so fatigued during the day that “fatigue impairment” was equivalent to being legally drunk about 25 percent of the time, according to a news report.

The study, conducted in 2010 and 2011 at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, showed that surgical residents got an average of only 5.3 hours of sleep a night, although the amount varied greatly from 2.8 hours to 7.8 hours.  Researchers found that the study participants were only functioning at around 70 percent of their mental effectiveness, which is equivalent to a 0.08 blood-alcohol level – a level considered to be legally drunk in most states.

Based on the fatigue level, researchers calculated that the residents had a 22 percent greater risk of causing a medical error than well-rested doctors.  Night shift physicians performed worse than day shift residents, sleeping fewer hours and being less mentally alert for longer periods of awake time.
